What is the best way to stop beggars, tramps and other low-lifes from bothering me?

I live in Manhattan, and they come over from Jersey or somewhere. If I was a guy I could kick them or something, but I can't mace them all. How can I protect myself? They smell and might get my clothes dirty or worse.
